UPDATE: Flagged for removal. I guess that answers that!
I’ve been generically searching for anything cheap, with a manual transmission. I found !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! just now. That’s not a vehicle I expected to find on this search, but it really is a manual. The ad doesn’t exhibit any of the common red flags ... but $1500 for a vehicle that new and that clean? I mean, I know the manual version of this is wildly undesirable to the general public, but that seems way too cheap to me. What do you all think? Am I missing something?
Link in replies, in case of kinja.

mileage isn’t listed so it could have 240,000 miles, and a fresh detail job.

Scam. It’s just to cheap. By all means, reply let us know how it goes.

From my experience the manual trans is a value killer. They are impossible to sell. There was a $6000 price difference between the manual and automatic F10 BMW I bought off lease 4 years ago.

I would be a little wary due to the price - and there are some pretty sketchy areas within the circle map. But maybe they just want to unload it?
Plenty of public places right there to meet at during the day, if the title is ok and mileage isn’t to the moon and back, though?

Seems cheap. I’m always suspicious of a for sale by owner vehicle that has no plates on it.

2004 isn't as recent as it used to be. That's about to be a 15 year old car. I do this a lot when I'm looking at used cars and get suspicious of low prices. Then I remember that a car from 2008 is already a decade old.

YOLO!

Seems unlikely, but worth checking out.

Fakey McFakerson. Weird almost intentionally vague verbiage, no plates, no contact data.

Mileage isn’t listed, could be pretty high, and it’s 15 years old . Also, undercarriage could be pretty rotted. When that car was new, I was buying 10 year old cars at that price. Lots of cars newer than that selling for less than that. I just picked up an ‘03 Durango for under $3k with 120k. Seems legit.

I did my usual Craigslist scam research. Photos aren’t tiny and there are many provided, the photos don’t seem to exist anywhere else on the net (also good, scammers like posting in multiple places), and the pics look pretty current-ish. It’s definitely been heavily detailed (look at the dirt on the door hinge ) so check for underbody rust. I’d say go for it!

This one could go either way for me: scammer or totally tech-averse seller. And if it’s legit, probably over 200k.
Worth an email, anyway - you’ll know from the replies what you’re dealing with.

Does seem far-fetched if it’s high mileage:

This.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 13:35 |

That’s probably the case here. I don’t see anything that screams “scam!”, but it sure is a lazy ad. T he price could probably be explained away by a high odo reading.

about a grand for e90s, when i bought mine.

I went to look at a ca r with my cousin this summer, and found out that despite being sold at a dealership it was listed as for sale by owner. Turned out this one salesman like to use this for their lower end, sub 8,000 dollar used cars. I found , and flagged all of his ads. Obviously we walked away from t he car, didn’t even make an offer.

Yeah, I could see that.

Fair point
![]() 12/13/2018 at 13:57 |
|
Oh, good point. Probably a curbstoner.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 13:58 |

Well, we’ll first see if it’s available after the holidays. Underbody rust definitely needs to be checked for. This could look like the titanic under that lower cladding.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 13:59 |

Good point. Still seems quite young, given the age of everything else I’m seeing in this price range.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 13:59 |

The bottom side will definitely need a close inspection.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:00 |

Good point.

Trade in value for that car with 200k is about $800 according to KBB. Double that and you get your value. $1500 sounds real to me.

There are sketchy places in Des Plaines?
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:02 |
|
I will if it’s still available after Christmas.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:03 |

Contact info is in the reply link. Given the lack of plates though , it’s almost certainly a curbstoner.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:04 |

Yeah, sometimes we need to check with each other just to make sure though.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:04 |

I would like for that once to last quite a while longer though.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:07 |

Thats roughly auction price / trade in value, so it may be legit. I’d at least email.
2004 is not “new” by any means.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:08 |

I will if it’s still available after the holidays.

You're right, perhaps I'm too hardened from living in the most expensive used car region in the world (hyperbole)
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:32 |

Salvage title perhaps? That and/or over 200,000 miles would get it down to that price.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:33 |

Flagged now, d’oh
The pragmatist in me also wonders why the ad was up for 10 days if it was real, barring the seller being lazy.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:41 |
|
Well there you go then.
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:41 |

Well, it’s flagged now, so that answers that.

That area is right down by the river, and the railroad tracks. Floods frequently, too. Quite a few trailer parks there.
It’s not that bad though- I bowled at River Rand bowl for years, and the original McDonald’s franchise was right there, too. Also the hubcap joint is there too ( River Rand Auto IIRC).
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:49 |
|
If the car is legit at that price it’ll be gone in a few days
![]() 12/13/2018 at 14:50 |
|
Oh yeah, I remember that place.
Anyways, the ad has been flagged, so I reckon the mysterious mystery has been solved.

Awww that’s too bad.

This is the perfect way to find yourself robbed of $1,500.

Boston would like to challenge you on that. Anything with no rust demands new model retail price even if its 10 years old with 100k miles
![]() 12/13/2018 at 15:29 |

Could just be someone who flagged it to make sure they get it and nobody else does. I’ve seen that happen with motorcycles before, even ones I actually bought. lol
![]() 12/13/2018 at 15:51 |

The jokes on them then, I’ve got about 32 cents on me right now ;)

I bought the car, brand new for $11720CDN or $9019.86USD plus taxes.

I’m shocked they build even one equipped like that.

You can have it when I'm done as your next rally cross car.
